Wait- The Maid Makes How Much?!

One of the most common topics brought up amongst nannies is what constitutes adequate pay. I would like to lightly touch on the subject with a story from a previous job.

I have worked for some very wealthy families , all of whom have had cleaning people come to their homes at least once or twice a week. I've never known how much they make, but often regard the lump of bills they're handed with a bit of curiosity. "Are those singles?" I wondered. Is it possible the cleaning people could be making that much more than me? "Must be singles," I would reassure myself as I continued taking care of my employer's children.

Then came the day where it became painfully obvious that some services within this specific home were valued more than others. On that particular morning, my employer was leaving her house in a hurry, before the woman who came to clean was done. She would need me to pay her.

"Can you just grab one of those blank checks in the top drawer and fill it out for me? She gets $100."

"Wait just a minute!" I said. "She has been here less than two and a half hours. That means she's making $40+/hour to clean your toilets?! You can take my $9.50 an hour and shove it!"

Well, I said it in my head, anyway, because my employer was already gone and even if she was still there, let's be honest-I would have smiled and complied, secretly hating my existence. Was I wrong all along? Was my employer's most precious darling her dishless sink? Her perfectly made bed? In what bizarro world does it make sense to pay your childcare worker less than a quarter of what you pay someone to clean up after you? (Which, I might add, was something I regularly had to do as the nanny, so my pay should have been $49.50/hour, really). Not to demean this woman's job in any way; she, too, has to deal with many of the problems that nannies do in their jobs...this is simply to comment on the employer's priorities.

As I wrote the check out for the cleaning lady, I smiled and couldn't help thinking, "Good for you. You convinced these people that having a sparkling bathroom is worth $40/hour." The question, then, is: How do I convince them that their children should be worth as much?

I saw on the calendar that the interior designer was coming the next day. It's impossible that she could get paid more than me for picking the proper vases for the living room. She must only get $8.00 an hour, right?

hi, everyone. I was wondering your professional advice on this matter? I have worked for a family for 6 months. They are putting their daughter in pre-school in January. This last month my dog had really not been well and the second to last week the family I worked for told me to take a day off when i needed to take my dog to the vet in the morning. This was nice to offer, but I also needed the money and took off the day (I was not compensated for it), I had spent $2000 on my card in vet bills this month. Then, the last week, they did give me a nice holiday bonus $400 - I work 3 full days a week. When i asked my employer about rescheduling a day to make up Christmas, we agreed on Firday but at the last minute told me that she only needed me half a day and only paid me for half a day!!! So I worked 2 weeks and missed 2 days of work. I just feel that she should have just paid me anyway for Christmas- that is the classy thing to do. But I take part responsability for not asking for paid Holidays at the beginning of employment. She still wants me to watch her child 1 morning a week, and I already got a new job 30 hours a week in the afternoon. That experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I feel like I just want to end it. I had been graceful about this whole situation and kep my mouth shut to preserve my reference. Was I Being a pushover? Or perhaps i deserved this treatment for not addressing this before hand? Or am I being ungrateful for what they did give me? I just felt like it was giving a gift and than taking some of it back again. I certainly obtained a lot of wisdom from this and the new family is going to take very good care of me this year (paid holidays, and I will get paid ALL of the hours that we agree upon)> THANK YOU for your feed back on this!

Funny that I should stumble upon this site today. Just this afternoon I saw the housekeeper's check for $100. She is here a MAX of 3 hours which means she's making $33/hr. I make $10 and even them, it is taxed.

How can they justify paying someone more to take care of their house than they do the person who cares for the life they created? I get here before the child wakes up and put her to bed most nights. I am all but rasing her. I'm not asking for $33/hour but for Heaven's Sake don't pay me as little as you do!!

I am, as you can imagine, looking for a new job. I'd like to work for someone who appreciates that I am a professional and will compensate me accordingly.

You definitely should have been paid for Christmas- everyone is, why not you, too?!?

You must be joking. Do you think we want to pay the housecleaner $30+ per hour? Or the nanny/babysitter $15-$20 per hour, plus gas, tolls, and meals, or whatever outlandish requests are made on us? The majority of families who would perfer one-on-one childcare from a nanny as opposed to a daycare choose to stay home because these economics don't make sense.

We're held captive by service people who continuously demand higher wages for mediocre at best service. The truth of the matter is that you wouldn't clean someone else's toilets for $30+ per hour and the people who are willing to require/demand this wage. Most of the time we're not even there to know how long they spend at our home for the $100. We know we're getting ripped off, our only option would be to clean ourselves.

The nannies that are troubled with picking up the dry cleaning and running to the grocery store are the ones without children themselves who have never had to manage a busy household while working.

If the mother or father were staying home to take care of the children they would be expected to handle the household duties including the children. Why is this above a nanny? You act as though if you're asked to do anything besides take care of the children the parents are some how flawed. Errands have to get done whether you tow the children or their parents do. I presume you accompanied your mother on countless errands when you were a child and it seems you've survived.

"our only option would be to clean ourselves."

boo hoo.
oh, to be privileged.

commenter 1:59: I suggest you clean your own house and take care of your own kids. Quit whining or I will put you on a time out.

The question, then, is: How do I convince them that their children should be worth as much?

exactly. this was a great post. thank you for sharing.

hey 159. there is a difference between hiring a nanny and hiring a household manager/personal assistant.

if you want someone to care for the kids, that is a nanny. she shouldn't have to run around and do all your errands. a nanny's job is specifcally to care for the children and do errands/tasks that relate directly to them.

you sound very bitter. have a nice day.

1:59 -
I'm not a nanny and I'm not a parent. But people like you need a big reality check.

If you feel the services you are getting are inadequate, you need to stay at home and care for your own children, and clean your own house.

But you won't, will you? You don't want to miss that paycheck. You don't want to miss that misguided sense of "importance" by having a career outside of your home. You don't want to miss personal freedom away from your children.

You're a selfish, spoiled woman who should never, ever have procreated in the first place. No wonder our society is so screwed up, because most parents in this day and age are simply not willing to be parents. They would far rather pay (and poorly at that) someone else to raise their kids for them.

Shame on you, shame on you. I do hope you have had your tubes tied and your husband got the old "snip snip".

You can't really compare $/hour. The housekeeper that comes 2 hours to a house can hardly do 4 a day, every day. I mean that the hourly rate includes money for the travel and flexibility. So what can only be realistically compared is how much they do per week.

Still, they may be doing more than you -- but they are doing the things you explicitly do not want to do: cleaning/laundry/etc. I mean that you'd probably only agree to do them IF they were paying you more. Which is what happened to the housekeeper: it's not the family that wants to pay them more than you, it's them wanting more money than you do; i.e. they cannot find a cleaner that works for 10$/h, but they can find a nanny...

This is why I am firing my nanny...nannys acted like the "priveledged help" they want to stroll the park, fold a few baby clothes, paid holidays, use of the car...what job on earth besides being a nanny povides so many benefits. And on top of it, you choose your profession, but then complain about how mistreated or underpaid you are by your "rich" bosses. You think we don't love our kids as much as a clean toilet? It stinks to clean pee and soap scum...its fun to chat on your cell phone and play candyland and color. I wish I could play and be with my children for a living -the worst part abot kids is the occasional tantrum or their non stop energy! But as a nurse I work long hard hours and if you nannys want to know what hard work is try changing bed pans and dealing with sick people all day - at least they are a more appreciative bunch than all the nannies on here!

5:29pm...You sound like a bitter parent. I'm sure your nanny will be happy you are going to fire her. She is probably already looking for another job. If you honestly think that being at your house all day with your children, "stolling in the park", and all the other things you listed are benefits of the job, I strongly suggest you pull your head out of your butt! A good nanny doesn't spend the whole day on her cell phone either. And I have never had a day where all I did was play all day. You OBVIOUSLY don't spend enough time with your children if you think everyday is easy and fun and all you do is color. I feel sorry for your nanny AND your children!

a bunch of bitter nannies with too much time complaining and thinking that they deserve more...

Wow, 5:29 you ARE a bitter nurse. To start off, I am not a nanny, nor would I ever want to be one. Kudos to those who do take care of working parents children day to day. Just because some nannies are venting and discussing wages does not mean you can butt in and throw out insults in such a prude way. They have a right to contact fellow nannies in accordance to whether or not they feel underpaid or in your case underappreciated. These people look after your children’s livelihood.. HOW could you be so pissed about someone who made a career choice to do this.. in essence, to help you AND your children?

Hey Ladies,
Im a nanny to a 6 month old baby, 2yr old and 3 year old My family ask me to do everything and anything from cleaning, to gift wrapping car washing, to gardening and getting a nutritious meal on the table by 430 having said that I adore my family they do appreciate that i do all i can to make there home happy. Yet the reason for my post is I am astounded at what
I read to be your approx wage ($10 hr!!!!) I think you all need to move out of america! As Nanny I am paid $35 an hour, plus petrol card and while i am in there home they are responsible for feeding me any meals Im there for most days this is breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks and if i go away with them which i do alot I am paid the entire time Im away as well as any travel costs and a '$100 away from home' fee for an example an overnight trip is 48 hours at $35 + $100 'away from home fee' and any travel costs i have incurred (plane tickets, train tickets etc), they also pay for my meals etc.
This is why I do all I can to help them out! but at ten dollars an hour I think the parents should expect you to watch TV and talk on your phone all day!!!

It's up to nannies to demand more pay. We've let the agencies and families dictate our worth far too long. They can't do without us - so it's up to us. Rise nannies!!
